Objectives

After you have completed this section, you will be able to:

  1. Solve inequalities involving addition or subtraction.
  2. Solve inequalities involving multiplication or division.
  3. Translate words into inequalities or inequalities into words and/or solve the problem.
  4. Represent solutions to inequalities as graphs or solution sets.

Solving Inequalities by Addition and Subtraction

Any mathematical sentence in which we use >, ≥, <, or ≤ is called an inequality. These are the meanings of the symbols.

Symbol

Use

is greater than

x > 3; includes all numbers greater than 3, but not 3 itself

is greater than or equal to

x ≥ 5; includes 5 and all numbers greater than 5

is less than

x < 6.2; includes all numbers less than 6.2, but not 6.2 itself

is less than or equal to

x ≤ ½ ; includes ½ and all numbers less than ½

Tip: The < symbol resembles the letter L for Less Than.
