The Fertile Crescent: Introduction

Mesopotamia

The world’s first civilizationsbegan in a regioncalled the Fertile Crescent.The region iscalled this because the soil is very fertile or good for growing crops, and the land is shaped like a crescent moon. It stretches from the Persian Gulf to the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The eastern part of the Fertile Crescent, which is between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, was called Mesopotamia, or “the land between the rivers.”
