We had a student who came to us as a senior. She was two credits behind, and had been expelled from her home school. By coming to our school and using Aventa, she was able to get the Credit Recovery she needed in addition to her regular classes. She graduated on time.
Alignment to state standards is the basis of the Aventa course design process. We identify standards that are consistent across the vast majority of states which allow us to build courses that meet the needs of most academic organizations. This also provides a good foundation to customize courses to meet unique standards of specific states.
The Aventa alignment process is based upon the theories of several prominent experts in instruction. These include:
- The instructional alignment process of Alan Cohen
- The Depth of Knowledge structure of Norman Webb
- Understanding by Design by Jay McTigue and Grant Wiggins
During the state standards alignment process, Aventa identifies student performance requirements, creates assessments to accurately evaluate those requirements and designs instructional practices that will prepare students for successful performance on those assessments.
There is no one-size-fits-all assessment that meets content standards. Traditional tests can only adequately assess certain kinds of learning, so a complete assessment program must use a variety of alternative assessment practices such as discussions, project-based learning and authentic and performance assessments.
Aventa courses include each of these assessment components to ensure that students can demonstrate that standards have been met.
